Valentine’s Food: A Legendary Recipe To Captivate Your Man’s Attention

Okay, I know what your thinking there ain’t no food that will make a man fall in love or stay in love with me but hear me out, there is a legend to this recipe that makes it true.
First of all, the man will have to love you for you, but this recipe doesn’t hurt making him feel like a million bucks.
Who doesn’t love to be cooked for?
So, here is the legend. Not so long ago, when I graduated high school, my young married BFF gave me all of her glamour, fitness and Vogue and girly magazines.
Let’s just put it this way, the internet was still new so magazines were the outlet in which we found out the fashion news, celebrity gossip or my favorite, editorial interviews.
So, in a Glamour magazine on a cool spring day, there was an editorial piece that featured a woman that suffered from a broken heart over and over again. I could relate, at that time I was a woman scorned and heartbroken, so I soaked in every word.
One day this devastated woman met this techy nerd guy and ended up falling for him even though she promised herself she wouldn’t fall again. Cliche, I know but hold on a sec.
Her mom ended giving her an old family Italian recipe and said, ” Wait until you find the man you think you love and make him this recipe it is proven to have him fall in love with you.”
She was cynical as I would be too, but she went along with it and has this guy over for supper on her day off of work and labored all day as she cooked this recipe.
Sure enough, not only did he LOVE the food but he complimented her as that it was one of the best meals he ever had.
For clarity purposes, we are talking about a pasta dish, nothing more.
They were married that same year!
I did what any sensible woman would do I poured over the article then ripped it out ( pre-Pinterest days) and stuck it into my journal. Because I knew one day my heart had to heal, and maybe just maybe there would be someone worthy of this recipe.
I did, three years later my heart had gotten broken so many times it was in pieces. I did not even know it could beat again.
God helped me pick up the pieces and when my heart began to heal, here he came. The one my heart flip-flopped for. “Oh no!” I thought, “this guy is going to smash all of the hard work that I had to do to put my heart back together! My heart was past the super glue curing stage, I was ready to love and so was he. We were married shortly after, but this recipe was long forgotten in the dusty journals that I had written the memoirs of all my dumb mistakes to my triumphant moments.
It was not until I was moving my final boxes out of my parents home after our wedding that it fell out of the journal. I laughed at the ironic nature that I had found love without this potion pasta but would for sure make it for the love of my life.
It took me years of being a busy a wifey to finally make this recipe for our third Valentines Day together as Mr & Mrs!
Apparently, he loved me for me ( I still can’t believe it, haha) but I remembered the long lost recipe and as broke college students, I was determined to make him something fancy so I opened the crumpled recipe, worn from years of it falling out and being shoved back into the journal.
Don’t judge these were my pre-minimal days but still, I must admit I find myself doing this to important papers.
Anyways, he loved the aroma that filled the house and I reflected on my broken heart just six years prior and could not believe that on a cold February 14th, I was off of school making my love this potion pasta. He loved every bite of it and now THIS year I will pull it out again and make it after 8 years.
He says he feels special even though I make food from scratch every single day this recipe is special. It comes with love, memories of growth and pain that continues to turn to joy with my hubby.
So, heres to you and your love or save it for later.
First of all the name is horrible but I call it the Love Potion or Potion Pasta.
Bolognese Sauce / Love Potion-By Unknown Italian Family Recipe
Note: Prepare to be home all day to cook this recipe, it is a recipe made from love and labor after all ♥
Servings: It makes 4 cups of sauce
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1large carrot, finely chopped
3 celery stalks, finely chopped
1-ounce pancetta finely chopped
1 pound of ground beef ( not lean)
1 Tablespoon of olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Pinch of allspice ( careful not to overdo it )
1 cup of whole milk ( I am going to do almond milk this time for my sensitive tummy mixed in with a little cornstarch to make it thicker)
1 cup dry white wine ( You can use cooking wine if you are against any alcohol ( it has a little bit of alcohol versus the wine. However, I actually use pinot grigio, just a cheap bottle it has a higher alcohol content but dissipates while it cooks all day and it seems to tenderize the meat to perfection but it is up to you).
1 ( 15 ounces) can of diced tomatoes with juice
1 pound Rigatoni Pasta
8 oz of Parmigiano, Reggiano Cheese for topping. ( I use regular aged parmesan, the fresh stuff though, Parmigiano, Reggiano basically means the region in which the parmesan cheese came from so I go local for a budget hack).
- Finely chop onion, carrot, and celery in a heavy bottomed pan or dutch oven over low heat, cook pancetta until fat is rendered, and pancetta is just beginning to brown.
- Add the chopped veggies and raise heat to medium and cook.
- Stir frequently until the onion is translucent and soft.
- Add ground beef breaking it up with a spoon and 1/4 teaspoon of salt ( to start), plus pepper and allspice. Cook until meat is brown.
- Add milk, when it begins to simmer, stir occasionally until milk has mostly boiled away ( roughly 30 min).
- Add the white wine and cook the same as the milking process ( boiling away)
- Add the tomatoes and juice; bring to a simmer, cover pot, reduce heat to low and allow the sauce to cook gently at a bare simmer for 2 1/2-3 hours.
- Season to taste with remaining salt.
- Just before sauce is done, bring a pot of water to boil, salt generously with one tablespoon of olive oil and boil pasta according to the package.
- Drain and mix with 1/3 of the sauce then serve remaining sauce on top of pasta, top with a generous amount of grated Parmigiano -Reggiano or freshly grated parmesan cheese.
- Light a candle, enjoy and fall in love or let the pasta work its magic of love. ♥
